PhD Quick Guide
IMDI educates and researches the structural, institutional and human factors of market access and success of innovations through the theoretical and methodological approach of social sciences, and more specifically management and organizational science.
IMDI provides applicants with a master’s degree or equivalent in any discipline with a focus on management, innovation theory and business/social innovation in the discipline of business and organizational sciences, which means the highest competencies corresponding to the 8th level of the Hungarian Qualifications Framework. The admission requirements and the order of the admission procedure are described in Section 3.1 of the IMDI Operating Rules. The application form can be found in Appendix 2. IMDI makes it possible for both those involved in the academic succession training of higher education and individual career builders in the industrial, public or civil sector to obtain a doctoral degree.
In the case of applicants who do not have a master’s degree in the field of management and organizational sciences (medical and health sciences, agricultural, technical, electrical engineering, etc.), the content of their previous studies, professional and managerial experience and scientific activities related to management and organizational science, as verified by appropriate documentation, will be examined by the DIT, and the knowledge required for the doctoral training in management and organizational science will be examined by the DIT, and the knowledge required for the doctoral training in management and organizational science will be examined by the DIT. require the inclusion of equalization objects. IMDI TRAINING OUTCOME OBJECTIVES
In line with the objectives of IMDI and the 8th level of the Hungarian Qualifications Framework (EQF) – Decree 229/2012 (VII.6.) – the competencies of the professional who obtained a doctoral degree in IMDI training in the field of business and organizational sciences in terms of management and business/social innovation that underpins the market introduction and market success of innovations are as follows. The aim of the training is to train researchers capable of creating new scientific results in the field of management and organizational sciences.
Knowledge
He/she has research-level knowledge of the directions, border areas, agreed and disputed connections, conceptual system and terminology of the discipline of management and organizational sciences.
He/she has the research methodological knowledge necessary for the independent examination of applied and theoretical research questions in the field of management and business/social innovation, which lay the foundations for the market introduction and market success of innovations.
Capabilities
Able to creatively analyse the practical and theoretical issues of management and business/social innovation that underpin the market uptake and market success of innovations; comparative and critical evaluation, as well as to formulate and convey new contexts that are individually, economically and socially relevant.
He/she is able to apply and further develop the methods of management and business/social innovation that lay the foundations for the market introduction and market success of innovations, to apply new theories in practice, to identify unforeseen professional problems, and to explore the theoretical and practical background necessary for their research and solution.
He/she is able to plan, implement, independently research management and business/social innovation projects that lay the foundations for the market uptake and market success of innovations, and to develop new techniques and approaches.
Attitudes
He/she has an interest and the ability to learn that enables him or her to identify and solve the currently opaque and unpredictable research problems of management and business/social innovation, which are the basis for the market introduction and market success of innovations.

STRUCTURE OF DOCTORAL TRAINING
Language of the doctoral programme
The doctoral training is conducted in Hungarian and English.
Forms of organised doctoral training
Based on the provisions of the Doctoral and Habilitation Regulations of Obuda University (EDHSZ) on the organised forms of doctoral training, IMDI launches organised doctoral training in the following forms:
- state-granted, full-time, full-time organized training,
- self-financed, full-time full-time organized training,
- self-financed, part-time, correspondence organised training,
- “Cooperative Doctoral Training” supported by the state with additional scholarships (the relevant special rules and the rules of the former Cooperative Doctoral Program can be found in Annex D4/B of the EDHSZ),
- self-financed doctoral programme of excellence in research (special rules for this can be found in Annex D4/C of the EDHSZ)).
- in the form of individual preparation.
Based on the EDHSZ and the relevant legal regulations, the organized doctoral training of IMDI lasts 8 semesters, during which the student must complete 240 credit points.
Stages of organised doctoral training
The doctoral program consists of two phases: the first four semesters include the “training and research” phase, and the 5-8 semesters include the “research and dissertation” phase. At the end of the fourth semester, at the end of the training and research phase and as a condition for the start of the research and dissertation phase, a complex exam must be passed (see Sections 18-19 of the EDHSZ), which measures and evaluates academic and research progress. In the first semester of the organized training, the student has to prepare a Work Plan under the guidance of the supervisor in accordance with Section 3.2 and Annex 4 of the IMDI Operating Rules.
Individual degree acquisition
During the individual degree, the student prepares individually for the preparation and defense of the theses of the thesis. An application for an individual degree can be submitted to the head of IMDI in accordance with the requirements of Article 15 of the EDHSZ, if the applicant:
- has a master’s degree or equivalent (Section 15 of the EDHSZ);
- fulfilled the language requirements for admission (Section 15 (6) b;
- completed 20 credits with publications published in the peer-reviewed journal of the field of management and organizational sciences recorded in MTMT.
The condition for obtaining an individual degree is the completion of a complex exam. Individual students are not obliged to obtain study credits, but may request a supervisor (Section 21 of the Student Welfare Act). When submitting the admission application, they must present at least one publication out of the minimum 5 publications required as an output publication requirement, which has been published or accepted for publication. The application and other conditions for obtaining a doctoral degree are the same as for organized training. During the individual degree, 240 credit points must be completed for the absolutorium, of which 120 credits will be given by the complex exam, and the additional credits must be completed during the degree.
Conditions for obtaining a doctoral degree
The conditions for obtaining a doctoral degree according to Article 18 of the EDHSZ are as follows:
- Passing a complex exam
- Obtaining an absolute
- Meet language requirements
- Fulfilment of publication requirements
- Doctoral dissertation (presentation of an independent solution to a scientific or innovation task)
- Summary of the theses (independent scientific results) of the doctoral thesis in a thesis booklet and their defence in a public debate
